View of the Dead Sea high above its shores, taken from a moving bus. The Dead Sea is more than 1400 feet below sea level! The great Rift Zone where two continents simply split apart, created this deep chasm. It runs from Syria in the North, to Ethiopia on the African continent. For instance, the 12 mile ride from Jerico to Jerusalem entails a change in altitude to more than 600 feet below sea level, to more than 2500 feet above sea level- a remarkable ascent!
