On the morning of September 11, 2001, we were awakened to a disaster in the making as we watched our television screens. Thick, black smoke was rising from one of the skyscrapers of the World Trade Center in New York City. Then a few minutes later, we witnessed a hijacked, commercial jetliner crash into the second tower sending an orange fireball protruding through the other side of the structure. Those memories are forever etched into my mind. I could not stop thinking about this tragedy. I went to my Roland KR-1070 and composed a piece entitled, "September 11, 2001" to reflect the emotions of this sad event of our lives.
The music is divided into 6 parts listed below
"September 11, 2001"
Part I (first 20 seconds)
The music opens with an approaching
sound, ending with a huge bang and explosion as a passenger jet liner crashes
into one of the towers of the World Trade Center in the early morning,
September, 11, 2001
Part II (next 60 seconds)
The awful fireball exposes
itself coming from the building, and debris cascades taking forever to
fall to the ground. At this point, the music seems to hold time still.
Part III
A church organ symbolizes
an outcry from humans asking, "God, what has befallen us?" Confused, dazed,
people do not know where to go. Many cannot stand the smoke and heat
and jump to their deaths from the building.
Part IV
The flute signifies our ears
turning to the dilemma of one man who is on the cell phone talking to his
wife. He tells her that he is going to climb to the top of the building
and maybe the rescue helicopters will arrive soon. He tells his wife that
he loves her. He knows in his heart that rescue is highly unlikely. He
is thinking back over his life, his marriage, children, his job, growing
up, his mother and father, and his wife's parents. He falls almost into
a blissful state. Life is so precious just now.
Part V
He then tries desperately
to climb to the top floor, but smoke is following him, catching up with
him. The music denotes his inevitable fate.
Part VI
Then we hear one note, followed
by 7 matching heartbeats**.
Then the note stops, followed by one heartbeat, and the background leaves
us in utter suspension as this person dies. Deep and high notes together
fade into nothing. The music ends.

I wish to dedicate this music to the thousands
who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, to their families, friends,
and relatives, in the hope that this music may convey some small sense
of closure to this tragic event.

Judith Edmiston with her uncle's flag
email today (Sept 15, from Judith)
Thank you so very much.
What fortune I had finding you as I left with
my uncle's flag.
We lost him last September, 16th.
I wear his ring, the one he received on his graduation
from the
U.S. Maritime Service Radio Operator's School,
Gallups Island, 1942.
My aunt, his wife, is just now past aneurysm
surgery, a heart attack,
and a pentuple bypass. And wanted me to
take my uncle's flag, the
one from his ship, to some memorial service...for
those in NYC and for
those in D.C. where they lived for 25 years,
my uncle in the Rural
Electrification Administration. [When I
visited those many years ago, he
would drive me through his Pentagon parking lot
"short cut" as we
drove to his downtown D.C. office.] I promised
my aunt I would have
my uncle's flag at and now, with grateful thanks
to you, she has
photographs that I did.
