This is a spectacular view of what we believe to be a bundle of nanotubes being synthesized. Since nickel and cobalt are
used as the catalysts, they may contribute to the specific aggregation of the carbon into the graphene sheet
but through a linear acetylenic carbon chain. The linear structure in the lower right hand corner is believed to be such a chain. The extra electron
density at the tips of these nanotubes is consistent with the higher "Z" number or scattering power of cobalt or nickel.
