A large flat tray is best for producing large membranes. Here is a young membrane after only about 5 days of incubation. This membrane has been cleaned by autoclaving and treatment in detergent to remove the entrapped cells of Acetobacter. The wet membrane is remarkably strong and has a gel-like structure.
