This slide shows the structural formula for cellulose. Note that the polymer consists only of a single type
of sugar, glucose, and that every other glucose residue is oriented 180 degrees relative to its neighbor. This
polymer chain is a rather stiff ribbon-like structure. We have recently imaged single glucan chains as this, using
a powerful type of transmission electron microscopy (to be shown later in the talk).
