Photo Album of our Tour
to the Holyland
January 4-14, 1999
Photo 59
This is another remarkable view of the Dead Sea showing the other side,
more than 20 miles away! The salt concentration in the Dead Sea is around
37 wt/%! This is 10x more concentrated than the Atlantic! In spite of this,
a number of organisms
(halophytes) grow in the Dead Sea. The alga, Dunaniella is used
to produce B-carotene and other fine chemicals. A satellite map of Israel
that I purchased clearly shows that the south end of the Dead Sea has been
"corralled" to farm Dunaniella.
